Signs of Dyslexia

Dyslexia affects everyone in different ways. At different times in your life certain symptoms of dyslexia will be more prevalent. Overall main signs include:

  • Difficulty spelling

  • Slower readers

  • Difficulty learning the sounds that letter combinations make`

  • Avoiding activities that involve reading

  • Difficulty with basic word decoding

  • Difficulty recognizing familiar words in new a context

Before school age some signs you may see are:

  • Late talking

  • Learning new words slowly

  • Difficulty remembering numbers, letters, and colors

Once a child starts school symptoms will become more noticeable such as:

  • Reading below grade level

  • Having a hard time processing what is heard

  • Difficulty finding the correct word

Dyslexia is not something you grow out of however with the correct recourses you can grow from it. Some symptoms you may see in teens and adults are:

  • Difficulty reading and reading aloud.

  • Mispronouncing words

  • Difficulty summarizing books or a story

  • Difficulty with math word problems

  • Trouble learning a foreign language
